Yearly Weather Report 2023

A year that was a fairly eventful one in regards to the weather. The year saw the joint warmest June on record, the 2nd warmest February on record which was also the 3rd driest on record. The warmest September on record which included a remarkable heatwave and the wettest October on record. The year was also the 2nd wettest on record.

January: January was mild month with just above average rainfall. The month turned mild from the 3rd which was the 2nd warmest day of the month when 12.2C was reached despite an air frost of -0.9C the spell lasting until the 7th when a couple of average days broke the run of double digit temperatures. The mild weather returned from the 10th until the 12th with warmest day being the 10th with 12.7C being the high. Temperatures fell away and a cold spell started from the 16th until the 23rd. The period sore the coldest day of the month with 1.8C being the high and the coldest nights -2.7C on the 17th and 18th. Despite cold spell it was mostly dry with only flurries of Snow on the 16th and 17th. This wa shte only Snow of the month. Temperatures returned to normal from the 25th and stayed around average to just above until the close of the month.

Rain in January was concentrated mostly in the first 15 days with 15.5mm on the 3rd , 16.7mm on the 10th, 14.5mm and 13.8mm on the 11th and 13th. The weather was mostly dry from the 16th with only 1.3mm falling until the months end. The month seeing a total of 85.1mm.

Winds reached 50mph on the 12th and 54mph on the 31st. Generally though a fairly quiet month over all.

February: The month was yet another mild month being the 2nd warmest on record. It was also a very dry month with only 9.7mm of rain falling.

The month saw double figures being reached on 14 days there weren't any cold days during the month and it had only one air frosts. Double digits were reached on 2nd and 3rd then again on the 7th after the only air frost of the month. The warmest spell was from the 14th to the 21st a run of 8 days in double digits. The warmest day was on the 14th when 13.3C was reached. This period also recorded the warmest night when 8.1C was the low. Temperatures remained close to average from the 22nd to the 23rd and from the 25th to the 28th. The coolest day was on the 25th when 6.5C was the high. Needless to say there was no Snow in the month.

The lack of rain saw only 0.2mm fall from the 1st to the 14th. Some rain fall on the 15th to the 17th a total of 2mm then 1.4mm and 0.8mm on the 21st and 22nd. A little sleet brought 0.3mm on the 25th and then a monsoon for the 27th and 28th brought 2.5mm of both days. The month was the 3rd driest on record with only 9.7mm falling.

The month saw some stormy weather on the 17th with 61mph being reached.

January and February: made sure that winter clocked in with an average temp of 5.3C joint 8th warmest on record. Winter 22/23 was the joint 19th driest winter on record.

March: Spring was delayed until the 12th as Winter finally decided to arrive lasting until the 14th. The month was a wet one the first month of the year to pass 100mm.

The month started with temperatures close to average until the 7th when the weather turned very cold and the first major Snow storm and the only one of 2023 arrived. The cold weather lasted until the 11th when temperatures went from -0.2C to 12.3C removing 15.5cm of Snow as it did so. A brief one day cold snap of 6.1C on the 14th and the final air frost of the month -2.1C on the 15th. The period from the 7th to the 12th produced six consecutive air frosts easily beating winter. The coldest night was on the 11th when -2.8C was the low. The met office when a bit crazy predicting -10C which wasn't ever going to happen due to the breeze and the lack of low upper temperatures. The coldest day was the 9th with only 1.1C being the high. Soon after the cold temperatures hit 15.8C on the 17th and then 15.6C the day after as Spring finally arrived. The spring like weather continued with only a brief hiccup on the 27th and 28th with the warmest day being matched on the 30th when 15.8C was reached again. The warmest night was on the 17th when 9C was the low.

The month was very wet with the highest rainfall being 37.8mm on the 9th this falling as wet and dry Snow. Further heavy rain fell on the 13th with 15.9mm falling. Considering only 1.9mm fell in the first 7 days as dry weather continued over from February it was surprising 128.7mm was reached. Against that only one day was dry and two days had a trace condition.

March saw one of the great Snow storms. In some ways very similar to how the cold spell started in late November 2010. The Storm actually got of to slow start with Snow falling on the 8th and by the morning of the 9th was just covering the grass. By the evening this increased to 14cm to 15cm and overnight as colder air dug in the Snow turned to dry Snow and the depth had increased to 31.7cm. If the Snow had been all dry you'd probably been looking at 60cm depth. Needless to say work closed for the day as the first job was to dig yourself out of the house. Further Snow continued to fall through the morning of the 9th albeit lighter and sunny spells took the temperatures to 4.6C and a slow thaw. The morning of the 12th saw 15.5cm still lying but a very mild day saw a rapid thaw of Snow with it all going during the day. Some more Snow briefly on the 14th but was the last of the Snow until December. Snow fell on 7 days beating the previous winter as did the number of air frosts 7.

March was breezy month but nothing untoward and 50mph wasn't reached.

April: April was an average month in regards to temperatures coming in at 8.6C just 0.2C below average. April also wet month.

The month showed little temperature variation with the warmest day being 17.6C on the 29th with the second warmest day following with 16.4C The coldest day was on the 14th with 9.2C and the next was the 12th with 9.6C. Nights showed a bit more in variation with air frosts of three days between the 3rd and the 5th with the coldest day being the 3rd with -1.4C being the low. The next coldest was the 4th with -1.2C. The warmest day was on the 30th when 9.3C was the low.

Rainfall wise rain reached double figures on the 5th with 10.5mm and the 27th with 11.5mm.

The month didn't see any windy days and overall April was fairly uneventful with nothing much happening.

May: May was a mild month temperature wise with the final average value being 13.4C +1.4C above normal. It was yet another dry month as well.

May wasn't a month of extremes so plenty of pleasant weather to be had. The warmest spell was between the 21st to the 27th with temperatures peaking at 24.3C the next warmest day being 22.7C on the 22nd. The coldest day was on the 12th with 12.2C and the next coldest 12.9C on the 31st. The coldest night was on the 3rd with 5C being the low. So a pleasant month overall.

Rainfall was again on the low side with only 26.1 with highest rainfall on the 6th with 6.1mm. From the 12th to the 31st only 0.4mm of rain fall this being on the 19th the month finishing with no recordable rain for 12 days. The 13th driest May on record.

Distant thunder was heard on the 5th but no storms hit area during the month.

Spring: Overall was the 8th warmest on record with 9.5C. It was the 17th wettest on record as well.

The question on everyone's mind would we see temperatures as high as last years. The answer was no but the year still produced records.

June: June was the joint warmest on record tying with 1957 with 17.2C. The month was also a dry month.

The first ten days of the month showed no sign that the month was going to be the joint warmest on record as temperatures were on the cool side. The coldest day was the 1st with 14.6C ad the coldest night was the 4th with 7.2C. Things got moving on the 10th as temperatures rose to 29.8C as 7 day hot spell started. No gradual build just straight into the furnace. The warmest day was on the 11th with 30.5C recorded followed by 30.2C on the 12th. Temperatures edged down slightly becoming pleasant on the 17th and 18th with high of 23.7C. Temperatures stayed in the low to mid twenties with further hot days on the 24th and 28th before turning cooler and pleasant from the 26th. The nights luckily weren't to warm so sleeping was easy. This was shown by the warmest night being 16.6C on the 25th. So luckily no prolonged baking session and no long cool spells.

Rainfall saw a run of 11 days with out rain wise broken on the 12th with 5mm of rain. The wettest spell was from the 17th to the 20th when 8.9 fell on the 17th 12.5mm the next day then 14.4mm on the 20th. Only 2.2mm fell after the 20th. for 29 days. A total of 43mm for the month.

The month produced two Thunderstorms one the 12th which brushed the station and two weak storms on the 18th. Distant thunder was heard on the 11th and 21st

July: After the warm June a lot of people were hoping for another hot month. Instead what they got was a washout and month with near average temperatures.

The month despite being a wash out wasn't a cool month. It featured one short warm spell from the 7th to the 9th which saw 27.5C being reached on the 7th then 24.7C and 24.2C on the following days. After that temperatures only broke the 20C mark on 7 days. However temperatures generally stuck around the upper teens hence the average temperature. The coolest day was the 14th with 16.4C . Nights were generally the lower teens with only two nights in signal figures these being the 4th with 9.4C and the 25th also with 9.4C. The warmest night was the 9th with 15.2C.

Rainfall was well above average and with one storm producing 27.9mm on the 8th. This wasn't the wettest day which was on the 23rd with 33.9mm. 12.5mm fell on the previous day as well. These three days contributing nearly half the rainfall for the month. Oher wet days were the 14tha dn 15th with 14.3mm and 15.1mm and the 26th with 11.8mm. There were only two days without any in rain in the entire month. July was the second wettest on record with 163mm beaten only by July 1973 which had 187mm.

July saw only one Thunderstorm and one thundery shower. Thunder was heard on two other days as well.

Could August save the summer well it was an average month with average rainfall. Most of the rain falling in the first 5 days so wasn't really a bad month.

August: The temperatures for August didn't vary very much. It has one hot day with 27.7C being reached on the 10th. Temperatures were generally in the low 20's which meant plenty of pleasant weather. The coldest day was on the 15.6C on the 5th. The nights were generally pleasant as well the warmest being 15.4C on the 11th while the coldest was 9.4C on the 31st. So a rather undramatic month overall.

Rainfall fell mainly in the first five days with 10.4mm,12.9mm, 10.4mm on the 1st, 2nd, 5th. The next highest was 9.8mm on the 26th. 12 days were either dry and 4 other days just a trace condition.

August saw some thundery showers on the 26th but was basically storm free.

Summer: was the 8th warmest on record so far from a bad summer and the 12th wettest. The washout in July I feel tainted most peoples view. If most of the rain fell in June most would have thought it was a good summer.

Would Autumn make any records or not? It did become the 3rd warmest on record it also managed top be the 3rd wettest on record as well.

September: September was a remarkable month and was the warmest on record beating 2006 record. For a while models were predicting another silly hot spell inline with last years record breaking July. After last year I no longer laugh at such silly temperatures. Indeed if there was less cloud around and less in the way of haze the temperatures may have been matched. For Sheffield the record high was beaten twice. The heat this time cranked up slowly with 24.2C being reached on the 2nd 25.6C on the 3rd. The 4th hit 28.4C and it looked like the 5th could be the record breaker but slightly cooler air aloft and cloud limited the temperature to 26.6C. The next day also missed the record with 28C. The record fell on the 7th when 29.1C was reached. It was matched the following day and then smashed on the 9th with 29.7C being the high. Night time temperatures luckily weren't too bad with warmest nights being the 10th and 11th with 17.2C. As with other record breaking heatwaves recently there wasn't a thundery breakdown. Temperatures dropped slowly back however like the heatwave in July last year the coldest day of the month followed with 14.3C being the high. The month generally saw average temperatures and became a history making joint second warmest month of the year. The first time this has happened.

It was a wet month overall with 87.2mm compared to the average of 65.8mm

October: October was a mild month and very wet month and was a record wet month as October joined the 200mm club with 217.5mm of rain.

The month featured a warm spell from 6th to the 10th with temperatures in the low twenties as we enjoyed an Indian summer. The warmest day was on the 9th with 23.2C and the next warmest as the 7th with 22.2C. The nights were warm with 15.5C on the 10th and 15.3C on the 11th. After the 11th double figures were only reached once more with 12.5C on the 20th. There were three cold nights on the 15th to the 17th when 2.1C was the low followed by 2.5C and then 3C. The coldest day was on the 30th when 9.6C was the high. The month came in at 1.4C above average.

Rainfall in looked to be well below average right up to the 17th. This was good news as the fairly dry weather prevented any severe flooding. The dryish weather came to a halt on the 18th when 20.3mm fell. This was followed by 19.3mm on the 19th. The 20th saw a mind boggling 91.1mm of rain falling a record for a single day. Far more than 2007 saw and far more than what caused the severe floods in 2007. Several rivers reached record levels but luckily the Don wasn't one of them the rain easing intensity for a while allowing the levels to drop which also prevented flooding. Catcliffe saw the new flood defences fail and were once again flooded. After the record days rainfall which saw more than a months rainfall in a day rainfall luckily eased off twith double figures only being reached on the 28th 11.3mm and 15mm on the 30th. If it hadn't the area would have seen floods like those in 2007. We were lucky and the council got away with it's neglect in regards to the waterways and road drainage as lesson of 2007 have no been forgotten.

October saw winds reach 51mph on the 6th but otherwise a quiet month away from the rainfall.

October was the 9th warmest on record at 11.8C. Rainfall wise it was the wettest on record with 217.5mm.

Would the final month of Autumn reverse the mild trend or would it maintain it would it be wet?

November: The month followed the pattern set by the October in being a wet month however it didn't follow October in regards to temperatures with these being close to average.

The month saw mostly above average temperatures only the last six days bringing down closer to average. There were mild spells from the 1st to the 8th. 17th to the 23rd and a cold spell from the 25th. The warmest day occurred in the 3rd mild spell when 14.3C was reached on the 18th. The second warmest day was on the 1st with 12.7C. The 19th saw the warmest night with 8.7C being the low. It was a long time before the first air frost of the month with this occurring on the 25th. The coldest night was reserved for the last day with -2C being the low. It was also the coldest day with the high of 3C. The month saw only four air frosts.

Rainfall fell mostly in the first four days and the last five days. 12.3mm fell on the 1st, followed by 10.9mm on the 2nd and then 17.9mm on the 4th. Rainfall remained in single figures until the 26th when 12.9mm fell and 11.8mm on the 27th. This accounted for just over half the months rainfall.

November saw a little Snow overnight on the 29th and was the first Snow since March.

Winds passed the 50mph mark on the 22nd as 53mph was reached but apart from 49mph recorded on the 13th it was a quiet month over all.

November didn't feature in the top 20 months in regards to temperatures. Rainfall wise it was the 18th wettest on record with 108.6mm.

Autumn: Autumn was the 3rd warmest on record. The day time maximum was the joint 4th warmest by day while nights were the 2nd warmest on record. Rainfall it was the 3rd wettest on record.

Would December reverse the run of mild months or would it follow them? Would it produce enough rain to make 2023 the wettest on record and would it be warm enough to make it the warmest year on record? It succeeded in regards to temperatures but only just but failed in regards to rainfall but only just.

December: Once more December was a very mild month. By breaking the 6C mark by hitting an average of 6.4C means that winter isn't going to be cold one unless it bucks a long time based trend. Winter only lasted seven days. After an impressively cold start to the month it shows how mild the rest of the month was. The coldest day was on the 3rd when 1.6C was the high. This followed on from the coldest night with -4C being the low. In the first seven days they were five air frosts. These were the last of the month. It turned mild from 8th and stayed that way mostly to the every end of the month. A few days were close to average but that was it. The warmest day was on the 18th and 24th with 13.4C. Christmas day failed to break records but was a mild green one. The warmest night was on the 19th with 9.1C with several days in upper 8C range which are around normal for the day time let alone the night time. Models briefly hinted at a cold end to month which would have scuppered the warmest year on record but this failed to materialise the closest it got to a cold spell was average by day.

Rainfall for December was well above average with the heaviest rain in the first ten days and the last six days as the month chased down but failed to make the wettest year on record. Snow brought 15.1mm of rain on the 3rd which turned to rain on the 4th with 17mm. More heavy rain fell on the 7th with 16.7C and then 23.2mm on the 9th so we were already up to average rain by the 10th. Rainfall amounts fell off after then before picking up again with 15.8mm on the 26th and 12.4 and 10.4mm on the last few days. This bringing the total up to 166.3mm and 190% of the monthly rainfall.

December provided some rare snow cover for two days with 7cm of lying snow on the 3rd and 6cm on the morning of the 4th which was the last of the month.

DEcember also saw a return of stormy weather with a 77mph gust on 21st of the month following 53mph the day before and 62mph on the 9th.

The month ended well above average rainfall coming in the 4th wettest with 166.3mm. It was the joint 5th warmest at 6.4C.

The year was the warmest on record beating last years record by 0.1C. A combination of the Tonga Eruption and El Nino. It didn't have a single below average month and also broke the September temperature record twice in three days and also produced the wettest day with 91.1mm in October. December saw the windiest weather for a long time with 77mph being reached. Away from the heat it also produced a snow storm to be remembered in March.

Next year 2024: With a declining El Nino combined with declining effects of the Tonga eruption temperatures in theory should decline a little. Climate change is only a small part of the problem the planet faces due to humanity and mankind needs to amke large changes in including population growth needs to be stopped leaving room for other life to flourish and we will need to find a way living and preserving other animals if we want the world to survive.
