Autumn 2020 A brief round up Autumn 2020 was overall an average season temperature wise and a dry one rainfall wise which may surprise a few people. The season generally followed dry, wet , dry pattern of the year although unlike summer the rainfall came in well below normal. The season also stopped the run of very warm months with September average, October slightly below and November coming as mild. Overall this meant the season coming in close to average and possible stopped the year being the warmest on record. December will decide that fate. September kicked with a couple of chilly nights before night time temperatures recovered towards normal. For the firm seven days the temperatures by day were below normal. A one day warm spell on the 8th brought temperatures to 24C one only 7 days to reach or break the 20 degree mark. Temperatures fell back to the upper teams again with some single figure night time values although the 9th recorded the warmest night of the month with 16C being the low. The period 13th to the 15th brought the warmest period of the month albeit short with 25.4C on the 14th and the hottest day of the month 27.2C on the 15th. The next day saw a 11.7C difference in temperatures as cool air arrived with night times being on the chilly side. A two day warm on the 21st to 22nd saw the month switch to a cold ending with the coldest day on the 26th with 12.1C being the high. Nights were very cold from the 24th to 30th with 3C being the low on the 28th and 29th. Rainfall wise September was very dry the highest rainfall only being 7.6mm and a period of 16 days from the 8th to the 22nd when only 0.6mm of rainfall. The monthly total of 25.8mm was only 39.4% of the monthly average. The month was very benign with 33 mph being the highest gust. October was a more active month and although the named storms Alex, Barbara and Aiden hardly had any impact at all on the region Alex did at least produce 32mm over three days. The heaviest rainfall of the month being 24.7mm on the 4th. Another 18.3mm fell on the 7th. Rainfall by the 8th had well passed September total as 59.7mm fell. Odds were on for 100mm plus month. After that despite forecasts of heavy rain very little fell from the 9th to the 25th with around 20mm being added. However enough rain fell from the 26th with 10.8mm to limp the total to 104.4mm 126.1% of the monthly average. The rainfall amounts again well below the suggested amount in the forecast though bar the 26th which was wetter. Temperatures over the month hardly varied during the month with a high of 16.4C on the 20th and a coldest day of 9.3C on the 26th. Only two days failed to reach double digits these being the 26th and 28th. Night time figures were in single figures through out but basically average. The coldest night 2.5C on the 23rd and warmest 9.9C on the 7th and 8th. Day time temperatures were a degree below average while night time were close to average. This meant October just edged under normal but basically considered as average. The storms Barbara and Aiden were notable for being none storms and had very effect on the regions weather. Another quiet month in regards to the winds with an absence of any stormy weather being the notable feature. November was another quiet month. It did produce a notable 17C on the 1st and the first air frost of -0.5C on the 28th. After the first it did cool down a lot with 8.5C being the the high on the 3rd and some cold nights on the 4th, 7th and 8th. The lows being 3.6C, 2.5C, 2.5C. The 4th producing the first visible ground frost at the start of the day. A very mild spell started from the 9th ;lasting to the 18th pushing the month to well above normal the last five days not cold enough to bring the average down to normal. The coldest day of 6.8C on the 28th actually saw the temperatures rising overnight with the peak around midnight. The 27th recorded the coldest night of -0.5C which was colder than actually forecast. The month finished on a dreary note with gray skies fog and mist being served up in more typical November weather. The highest rainfall of 7.6mm fell on the 15th and the next highest was 7.1mm on the 1st. The lack of windy weather continued with only 37mph being the high on the 1st and 2nd. It was a month of little action overall and certainly won't be remembered for anything. Autumn overall quiet uneventful and dry with average.
